Finally we will make a stop at the Colossi of Memnon, which represent the pharaoh Amenhotep III. The Greek historian Strabo related that as a result of the earthquake of the year 27 a. C., the colossi were damaged. And it was from then on when it was said that the statues sang every morning at sunrise.

Apparently, this phenomenon was due to the change in temperature caused by the evaporation of water first thing in the morning, which, when it came out through the fissures of the colossus, produced this singular sound; but with the restoration that the Roman emperor Septimus Severus made to the statue in the s. III d. of C., this phenomenon disappeared.

We cross to the eastern bank of the Nile, visit the temple complex in Karnak, built by different pharaohs, such as Ramses III, Taharqa, Seti II, etc. Among the grandeur of the Karnak temples, the hypostyle hall of the Temple of Amun stands out, with its 134 columns, 12 of which reach 23 m in height.

For centuries the temples of Abu Simbel were abandoned, until they were discovered in 1813 by the Swiss JL Burckhardt, and the Italian explorer Giovanni Belzoni went inside in 1817.

With the construction of the Aswan dam in 1964, the temple of Ramses II and that of Nefertari were cut piece by piece and rebuilt in a place close to 65 m higher, forming two immense reinforced concrete domes.

Then we return to the ship to continue sailing towards Kom Ombo, which means “the golden hill”.

Arrival and visit to the Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, with the head of a crocodile and a falcon respectively. It was the work of Ptolemy VI Philometor between 180 and 145 BC. C., during the first years of his reign. The southern half of the temple was dedicated to Sobek, god of fertility and creator of the world, and the northern half to Haroeris “Horus the old”, who was considered the initiator of Egyptian civilization, god of the sky, war and hunting . The temple is atypical because it is double and symmetrical with respect to the main axis, with two entrances and two hypostyle rooms.

Later, the pharaohs Ptolemy VIII and Ptolemy XII contributed to its expansion. Finally we see the Nilometer, a well-formed construction that was used to measure the water level of the Nile River, the source of life in Egypt, and was taken as a reference to predict the future economic situation.
We return to the ship to relax and continue sailing towards Aswan.
Night on board.

Day 12: Aswan
Full board on board.
In the morning we recommend the optional excursion to Abu Simbel, where the majestic temples of Ramses II and his wife Nefertari are located. We take a city tour of Aswan to discover the beautiful sights of this fascinating city.

We visit the famous granite quarry with its ancient unfinished obelisk built in syenite granite rock, where the building blocks of many of the ancient Egyptian monuments were produced and the old low dam and the new high dam of Aswan, colossal engineering feats built in the 19th and 20th centuries respectively to control flooding on the banks of the Nile.

We end the day with a pleasant and relaxing felucca ride on the Nile River, the typical Egyptian sailboat.
Night on board.

We leave very early by bus to Abu Simbel, crossing the desert until we reach Lake Nasser, in southern Egypt. These impressive temples were carved out of rock during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II and dedicated to him and his wife Nefertari to commemorate their victory at the Battle of Kadesh and show their power to the Nubians. In 1968, the removal of the temples was necessary to prevent them from submerging after the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the complex was moved to an artificial hill, built on the level of the future Lake Nasser.
Return to Aswan.

We discover the historic island of Philae or File, located in the reservoir of the old Aswan Dam, to gain a fascinating insight into ancient Egyptian life and beliefs. In it stands a group of Nubian temples, among which the beautiful Temple of Isis stands out, dedicated to the goddess of wisdom and love and surrounded by other religious buildings such as Hadrian’s Gate and the famous Trajan’s Kiosk, built by the great roman emperor

Day 13: Aswan – Cairo (by plane)
Breakfast on board and disembark.
At the indicated time, transfer to the airport to board the short flight to Cairo*. Arrival in the capital and transfer to the hotel. We enjoy the rest of the day free to explore the city on our own. We suggest a visit to the amazing Egyptian Museum to see its unique exhibits or go shopping in the city’s busy souks.
Night in Cairo.

Visit this medieval Islamic fortification perched on top of a hill in central Cairo, dating back to the 12th century and built to defend the city from the Crusaders. There we can admire the magnificent Alabaster Mosque, the largest at the beginning of the 19th century and the most visible in the Egyptian capital due to its high location and the height of its minarets.

We learn about the importance of this place for Egypt’s Islamic heritage before strolling through the Coptic quarter, the name by which Egyptian Christians are called, to explore one of the epicenters of the capital, dominated by narrow cobbled streets, churches, monasteries, convents, synagogues and street stalls.

Day 14: Cairo
Breakfast at the hotel.
Today we discover the most emblematic places of the Egyptian capital. We start with the unforgettable visit to the Giza plateau, the esplanade where the iconic three pyramids are located, considered one of the seven wonders of the world. It is the largest necropolis of ancient Egypt, where the burials of the pharaohs of the first dynasties were made more than 4,500 years ago, although its splendor reached it during the IV dynasty with the Cheops pyramid, also known as the Great Pyramid, the of Kefren and the smallest, Menkaure.

We continue to discover the secrets of the enigmatic Great Sphinx, an imposing sculpture 20 meters high and 57 meters long, and the Valley Temple of Kefren, 500 meters from the pyramid of the same name, which is preserved almost intact having been covered by sand until the 19th century. Transfer to hotel and rest of the day.
